Nasimiyu was born to a Ugandan mother and raised in the Bungoma district of Kenya.
Growing up in a family of 40 children gave her a deep commitment to the tribes and peoples not just of Kenya but of Africa as a whole.
She learned to weave baskets as a child and has adapted her knowledge to the grasses and natural materials of Northern California.
In 2003 Nasimiyu founded Born to Aid, a 501 (c). (3) non-profit foundation which has been granted NGO registration from the government of Kenya. The goal of Born to Aid is to help the disadvantaged children in Bungoma, Tuti Village. A portion of the sales from Nasimiyu Designs are donated to Born to Aid.
Featured Products
Handwoven baskets made from locally grown elephant grass, reeds, straw and other grasses.
Enjoy a traditional tribal Bantu basket woven of local materials using techniques from the Bungoma district of Kenya. When Nasimiyu moved to the United States from Kenya, she brought the basket weaving skills that had been taught to her by her grandmother. She weaves together those skills with an artistic sense and local materials to create baskets of unparalleled beauty and strength. Baskets can be used inside or outside, for decorative or practical applications.
Grasses are harvested in late spring from the wild places of Marin County, California. After harvesting, grasses must be dried, split, and twisted before they can be woven. It takes many hours and processes for a basket to be born.
Occasionally dyes are used and sourced from alder tree root, cactus apple, beet roots, flower roots and petals.
As each basket is unique, there will be slight variations in size, shape and color.
Product Dimension: Diameter Length: 22 inches Diameter Width: 15.5 inches Height: 10 inches Height including handles: 21 inches
Care: To reshape the basket: place under running water, rain or garden hose until it’s wet. Let the water soak in for at least one minute, then shake off excess water and mold the basket into your desired shape. Allow to dry naturally. This process will not harm the basket, dyes or the leather handles. Can be done whenever you need to adjust shape.
